Join the Mulgrave Magic Representative Program

Elevate Your Basketball Game with Mulgrave Basketball

Welcome to the Mulgrave Magic Representative Program, your gateway to taking your basketball skills to the next level. Whether you're a rising star or looking to improve your game, our program caters to players from U12 to U18, both boys and girls. Compete at the highest levels against other associations from the North in the NQJBC and across Queensland at the State Champs, where you'll have the opportunity to showcase your talent and represent Mulgrave Basketball with pride.

What's Involved in committing to the rep program?

Players are required to attend 1 to 2 training sessions a week, with times and days to be set by the head coach.

Junior Representative basketball in North Queensland involves playing in the NQJBC (North Queensland Junior Basketball Championship)

Tournaments are played in Cairns, Townsville and Mackay and games are played on Friday night, Saturday, and Sunday. At the completion of the NQJBC the team will travel to the Queensland State Championships held anywhere from Cairns to the Gold Coast. Depending on the age group these are either 4- or 5-day events held during the school holidays. Players will generally travel down the day before competition and return the day after competition ends.

Players are required to attend all three (3) NQJBC carnivals and the State Champs. If a player is unable to attend a NQJBC due to medical reasons (a doctor’s certificate must be provided), this may jeopardise their attendance at the State Champs.

Dates for these events can be found on the Basketball Queensland website

Scorers

Parents will be required to score at NQJBC Carnivals and any state champs that are in the north. If parents do not want to score or know how a fee of $25 will be payable to hire a scorer to cover their timeslot. Training will be available for those parents wanting to know how to score. Scorers for Mackay and state champs held in the South will be hired.

Travel

Players are required to find their own transport to the Cairns, Townsville and Mackay tournaments, whether that be in a private car or carpool.

Players travel and stay as a team for all State Champships (not in located in Cairns).

Commitment to the Program

Players are required to attend all training sessions as well as all NQJBC and State Championships. There may be other team events organised by the Head Coach which the player will need to also attend.

Many of our coaches have families of their own, I’m sure there are times during the season that they would much rather spend time with their own families, however they have made a commitment to YOUR child, so we ask that the commitment is shown back to them.

Trials

Trials will take place prior to each rep season. This will be a 2-week trial period and coaches will also observe players in the junior competition over these two weeks.

Squad selection will be announced after the 2-week trial, with the selected players being emailed before teams are posted online.

Expenses

Rep Basketball involves travel and accommodation and with this comes expense. Mulgrave Basketball runs a user pay program so that all costs are covered by the players themselves. We try and get costs as cheap as possible for the players but the average cost for a full season is approximately $2,500. This includes 3 NQJBC carnivals, 1 State Champs, admin costs and training sessions. The cost does not include Mulgrave Representative pack which all players must purchase and includes - playing shorts, backpack, towel, club shirt and socks.

As bookings for travel and accommodation are made at the start of the season all payments are made up front prior to the first NQJBC carnival and are non refundable as this is a large commitment for players and staff.

Junior Advanced Training Squad (JATS)

  • Deliver an elite‑level development program that enhances athletes’ ability to compete successfully at State and National levels.
  • Provide structured development and support pathways for representative coaches, strengthening coaching capability across the association.
  • Promote and identify clear progression pathways for both players and coaches toward State and National programs.
  • Develop athletes holistically, improving their mental, physical, and technical skills across all aspects of the game.
  • Foster disciplined sportsmanship, ensuring athletes train and compete with the highest standards of behaviour and professionalism.
  • Create opportunities for athlete identification, enabling players to be recognised for State‑level programs and to receive coaching from State and National‑level coaches.
  • Coach Involvement J.A.T.S sessions are led by the Junior Development Director with support from representative coaches. Coaches may be rotated through sessions to broaden their development and exposure to high‑performance environments.

Tours

Every three (3) years (approximately, based on player, coach and tournament availability), the JATS squad will participate in an interstate or international tour. Previous tours have included Melbourne to compete at the Eltham/Dandenong Tournament, an Outback Tour, and the United States. Tour dates and destinations are determined by the Junior Development Director.

These tours are optional for players and are not the primary focus of the JATS program. Instead, they serve as a reward for players’ dedication and commitment to the program.

Players who were selected in JATS during the previous season will receive first priority for tour selection, and all JATS tour participants must be current representative members of Mulgrave Basketball to be eligible.
